DAVID GILMOUR – ROYAL ALBERT HALL 2015

DGrahBkDAVID GILMOUR
London 2015 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Royal Albert Hall, London, UK; September 25, 2015. Very good audience recording.

David Cheal (ft.com), reviewing the September 23 show:

When he picked out his first few notes in this gig’s opening song, “5am”, a ripple of applause ran round the Albert Hall – not for the song itself, a dreamy, unremarkable prelude from his new album Rattle That Lock (released on September 18, 2015), but for the fact that this was absolutely positively Gilmour, with that clear, piercing, note-bending Fender tone and the hint of hesitancy, perhaps even diffidence, in his phrasing…

When all the elements came together, this was a terrific show, enhanced by surprise appearances from Graham Nash and David Crosby. “Us and Them” featured a searing sax solo from João Mello; “Astronomy Domine” was a rare (too rare), thumping foray into the days when Pink Floyd had a definite article; “Fat Old Sun” (from Floyd’s neglected Atom Heart Mother album) was a lovely piece of bucolic Englishness that spiralled off to become something majestic. Finally “Comfortably Numb”, with the hall latticed with breathtaking grids of light, was simply magnificent. By now Gilmour had become less diffident and was soloing freely, the hall ringing with that unmistakably clean, pure, brilliant-white sound.
